The hillside village of Aregno…

The village of Aregno and its hamlets, Torre et Praoli, invite you to come and discover the rich architectural and cultural heritage here. You will most definitely fall in love with this village. It is above all a former farming village, situated right in the middle of what was once known as the Garden of Corsica.

A plain overlooking the sea…

Now, go to the highest point of the village and look over the Aregno Plain which stretches out before your eyes. Imagine how it used to be, a luxurious oasis of olive trees, almond trees, lemon and orange trees, covering this vast area right down to the sea. The incessant fires here, unfortunately destroyed most of the village orchards.
Then, let yourself be tempted by a stroll along the paths which surround the village. You will be walking in the footsteps of the farmers who helped shape the landscapes here.

Heritage masterpieces…

Wander down the narrow streets in the village and look up. You will especially notice the impressive i palazzi constructions, which can be translated as “palace”.  These houses are proof of the wealth of their former owners. The bourgeois architecture of these huge mansions bear witness to the glory days of Balagne.
Now go into Aregno cemetery. Here you will find a true gem of Roman art, Trinity Church. Among other hidden treasures, come and admire the 15th century frescoes.

The sacred orange…

For many years, the village of Aregno and the locals have carried on the traditions of this farming past. In January, oranges are still blessed during the Saint Anthony the Great procession.  Other than this event, there are also many other traditional processions which are still honoured, each one followed by outdoor gatherings and meals.

Almond flavour…

Furthermore, if you happen to be in Aregno in August, you will be able to attend the A Fiera di l’Amandulu. Initially, this market was created to showcase the almond market in particular. As the years went by, it became more open to other local traditions, and more generally, to local know-how. Today, this market is used to promote all the farming and craftsmanship activities in Balagne. It is an opportunity to taste the delicious delights on offer and to meet the producers and locals.
