Meridianu

The Corsican polyphonic group, Meridianu, invites you to come and discover its artistic universe against a backdrop of traditional Corsican singing and paghjella.

The Meridianu group was born in inland Balagne, where centuries-old olive trees flourish.
Like the roots of the tree of peace, it is in this land steeped in history that Meridianu draws the inspiration and strength it expresses in its songs.

For the group, cultural heritage is the foundation on which the present is built, and from which the future is forged.
This is true every day when it comes to singing, and Meridianu has chosen to draw on the richness of a heritage largely saved from oblivion thanks to the research and recording work carried out by F. Quilici and F. Flori, among others. Flori among others.

Today, Meridianu strives to continue this mission by going out into the villages to find the last songs that can still be found today.

This does not mean taking refuge in a backward-looking attitude. Indeed, while a major effort has been made to restore the authenticity of Corsican songs of yesteryear, it is naturally from these solid foundations that the group sings the songs of the present day.
The choice of complementarity between tradition and modernity is the natural approach.
The group's repertoire, which includes a wealth of original material, is also distinguished by the diversity of its themes and a desire to open up to the world, as the name Meridianu suggests.

To live one's own culture intensely, to share it through encounters with others, to exchange in order to appreciate what brings people together, but also to perceive differences as enrichment.
These are the values that the group has chosen to convey and offer to the public.

Both singers and musicians, all three possess all the nuances of polyphonic singing, particularly paghjella, which they have been practicing for many years.

Aware of the need to preserve these UNESCO World Heritage songs, they have not hesitated to give of their time to introduce young singers and even choirs to the various traditional forms of Corsican song.
The trio is also keen to express the daily life of their island through songs of their own creation, without forgetting to keep a watchful eye on the everyday events experienced by other peoples elsewhere in the world.

The musical instruments used to accompany the voices vary from concert to concert, but guitar, cetera, violin and accordion are the most common. A variety of other small, homemade wind instruments are also used, depending on the color of the song.

This is how Meridianu achieves recognition from the musical community and success at concerts with audiences that grow ever more loyal year after year.

So, when asked about the future of Corsican singing, they can answer without a shadow of hesitation: "We don't have the right to betray these forms of singing that are our cultural heritage with approximate, repetitive and uncreative performances. That's why we've chosen to make the life of an artist our profession, the only way to produce regular, consistent work, in which everyone plays their part, but above all with the aim of expressing the very best of Corsican song together".
