Towards the sentry of the sea

Calvi, the sea, the harbour and of course, the citadel… It is from way up there, that you can see the Revellata peninsula and lighthouse standing proudly.  To explore this remarkable place, come along the Customs Officer’s Way (Sentier des Douaniers). This is in fact the footpath which takes you right up to the foot of this sentry of the sea, with only the scent of the maquis and the crashing of the waves to guide you along the way.

In the footsteps of the customs officers…

You too can watch over the coastline, just like the customs officers once did, by following one of these paths which wind around the towns of Corsica. But before venturing off on the path which leads to Revellata, take a short detour to Saint François Point. From the ruins of this former convent, you will catch a glimpse of the peninsula and the steep landscape of the coastline which can be made out on the horizon.

If you look down, you will see U Roncu just below you… a little beach, the sea, rocks and coves with sheer cliffs on either side. If you decide to make a stop on the sand, you will most certainly see the daring children jumping off the rock high above. The rock known as the Napoleon!

Now go back up and get back onto the path towards Galeria and Porto. You will soon enough find yourself on one of the ancient routes that the men on horseback would once have taken along the coastline of the Balagne and Corsica. Then, a few cliffs for those who like thrills, with the blue sky in the background, and eventually, you will reach the shores of the Revellata.

The maquis has scented the sea…

A few minutes later, you will be rewarded for your hard work. You can now make out the curve of the beautiful bay of Alga and the heavenly beach. Finally, you will see it in its entirety and you can take a break here to admire the view. After this well-deserved break, carry on down the path, between the sea and the maquis, which will lead to the Revellata Lighthouse. At the bottom of this gentle slope, here you are!

At this precise moment, you are facing a magnificent aerial view… a moment of pure fulfilment. Then, if you look over to your left, you will see the red rocks of the Scandola reserve in the distance, listed as a world heritage site by UNESCO. Now, savour the beauty of this landscape and enjoy the complete and utter silence!

You can now get back onto your route. On your way back, you will be guided by the green shades of the cistus, the beige of the rocks, the orange-red of the bushes and the yellow of the Corsican Immortelle. If you so wish, you can make a detour to explore one of the trails which leads inland before heading back.

Also, for those of you who remembered to bring your swimsuit, you could even go for a quick dip to cool off.

You have now finished this walk to the ends of the earth. We are sure you felt a change of scenery and were enchanted by the wild Corsican natural environment! So? Did you like it? We can go back whenever you like!
