The gateway to Scandola

Far from the crowded tourist areas, Galeria invites you to firstly come and discover the big beaches of thick, grey sand. The first one is just at the entrance to the village, and the other is right at the heart of the village of Galeria. You will most certainly notice that these beaches are very different to the other beaches of Balagne. Like the others you have the sea stretching out before you, but the difference here is that you will find yourself surrounded by a generous and preserved natural environment.

With a river flowing through the middle…

Flowing up to you is The Fango, one of the most beautiful rivers in Corsica and classified a “Site Rivière Sauvage” (Wild River Area). It winds around the Valley of  Falasorma and then flows into the sea through a magnificent and classified delta. Admire the mirror effect of the calm and crystal-clear waters. Then, set off on a kayaking trip to appreciate the remarkable wealth of wildlife in this completely protected environment. At the biosphere reserve, you are guaranteed a world of amazement among the lilypads and water turtles…

Throughout history…

Can you see the tower overlooking the beach at the entrance to Galeria? It was built by the Genoese, primarily to ensure the protection and to watch over the coast. It once symbolised the domination of the Balagne by a powerful foreigner. However, it was destroyed by Niolu sheep farmers during the great Corsican revolution, as they were unhappy with the plundering of their lands.

An agro-pastoral tradition…

As you have surely noticed, the Corsican mountain spirit is never far away in Galeria.  Between the Valleys of Falasorma and Marzulinu, Galeria remains firmly attached to its history and traditions, particularly those relating to transhumance and the Niolu sheep farmers.

It is in fact thanks to this agro-pastoral history that Galeria is such a great place to visit today. It is also the reason why there are so many producers here. They are so proud to build on the specialist know-how passed down by the Niolu population. Therefore you will be able to taste the delicious local goat’s and sheep cheeses, and also deli meats and biscuits. The choice is yours!
